Why Chlorine is so Very Dangerous
Drinking chlorinated water is bad enough but showering and bathing in it is even worse.
Our body can accumulate, through dermal (Skin) absorption, more chlorine (a cancer causing agent) and other contaminates during 24 normal showers or baths than it could get from the amount of water you drink over a 5-year period.
Chlorine is classified as a poisonous pesticide and it it reacts chemically with other organic matter in the water, to produce chlorination by-products, chemicals called trihalomethanes and organochlorines.
How much damage are we doing to our hair, hands and skin altogether by showering or bathing in chlorinated water?
CHLORINE EFFECTS ON BEAUTY & SKIN CARE
1. Chlorine cause excessive dryness of the skin, wrinkles and premature aging +
Chlorine is a known strong oxidant which accelerates the aging process. This is reported by leading research scientists throughout the World. Chlorinated water, particularly at high temperatures, poses special risks for wrinkles
Our skin produces its own natural oils and moisture through the senceous glands. There is evidence that shows that Chlorine destroys proteins and strips oils from the body. Chlorine can also damage the skin and cause premature signs of aging. Even small amounts of chlorine can be harmful over time. When you shower, heat opens your pores and allows the chlorine to seep into your skin. Chlorine strips the skin of its natural oils and causes it to dry and crack, which can lead to wrinkles. If you add this to the fact that most people take hot showers, the drying effect upon your skin is quite drastic.
2. Dull, brittle and split hair +
Chlorine sucks the sebum out of your hair, which may cause the cuticle to crack. This damage causes your hair's natural sheen to diminish, and the unprotected cortex to potentially "split," creating split ends.
3. Premature Grey Hair +
There are many causes of premature gray hair. It can be caused by chlorine in water, frequent hair coloring, stress and a disease called Leukotrichia.
4. Hair Loss and Dandruff +
Selenium, mercury, aluminum, zinc and lead are all minerals that contribute to hair loss. Each of these minerals can be found in the water that is pumped into your shower every day.
One fundamental reason for hair lost is due to dandruff. As your skin flakes off in form of dandruff, it exposes the root of your hair and the hair to fall off. Also,do you itchy or scratch your scalp frequently or do it at night without control because it is very itchy? This is very bad because this damage your skin and result in dandruff, which result in exposing the hair root, which result in hair loss.
5. Hair Dye +
Showering in steamy chlorinated water, the chances of having to dye your hair more often increases due to the effects of the chlorine.
How? Chlorine strips the natural protective oils from your skin and hair… causing excess drying. This in turn breaks down the dye.
6. Increases Acne outbreaks +
Exposure to Chlorine increases Acne outbreaks because of it's inherent skin irritation effects. Chlorine irritates rashes, causes rashes, and severely dries the skin. Consider the causes of Acne (both internal and external) and it's easy to see how Acne can worsens with exposure to Chlorine.
In most cases, when the skin becomes overly dry, the body reacts by releasing more oil than usual through the skin. This causes too much oil to be produced and conditions for Acne improve.
If the Acne condition is internal (ie: body reacts to processed sugars, or certain types of foods) then the Acne may initially improve, but with time will actually worsen because of the Chlorine's drying effects on the skin (more oil is produced, etc etc).
CHLORINE's ADVERSE HEALTH EFFECTS
DID You Know?
Humans are now the most chronically diseased species that has ever been recorded in the history of civilization.
Researchers come to the chilling conclusion that our exposure to toxic chemicals in water is underestimated. Scientific research is now confirming that showering in hot chlorinated water is toxic and can result in various dangers to your health. The American Chemical Society estimates that "we could receive from 6 to 100 times more chlorine by breathing the air around showers and baths than we could by drinking water."
Your shower and bath area may be one of the most dangerous toxic locations in your house. Taking a shower or bath without having a filter should not be an option anymore!
There is significant amount of evidence and research to support that avoiding chlorine is a sound decision. Any smart parent will protect their children and themselves from unnecessary exposure to this chemical.
Your skin is the largest organ of your body, if you are showering or bathing in hot chlorinated water, think of your skin as a sponge absorbing large amounts of this deadly chemical. The danger here is that if you have long term exposure to this chemical chlorine, it leads to the production of free radicals in your body. Free radicals can cause tremendous damage to the cells in your body because they are considered to be carcinogenic.
The effectiveness of the nicotine patch is a good example of the effectiveness of trans dermal delivery. Contaminants are absorbed through the skin the same way, only they bypass the digestive system and go directly into the blood stream.
If a small nicotine patch can absorb nicotine into the blood stream, Imagine how much toxic chemicals are absorbed through your whole skin in a hot shower.
7. Spontaneous abortions +
A study published in Epidemiology in 1998 found that one of the DBP's called bromodichloromethane was associated with spontaneous abortion in women who drank more than 5 glasses per day of tap water.
8. Birth defects +
A study by researchers from the University of Birmingham has shown some very disturbing news linking chlorine, found in regular tap water, to tragic and increased difficulties with pregnancies.
The danger of exposure to pregnant women happens when the chemical by-products of chlorination called trihalomethanes (THM's) are absorbed through the skin and then transmitted to the womb.
Studies have linked THM's with:
1. Low birth weight newborns
2. Children with heart problems
3. Cleft palate
4. Major brain defects
5. Spina bifida
6. Anencephalus, a brain condition, rose to 17 percent in high THM areas
7. Hole-in-the-heart defects nearly doubled
8. Neurological abnormalities in infants
9. Increased incidences of neural tube defects
9. Stillbirths +
Content Canadian study from Dalhousie University reported that women who drink or bathe in water containing these chemical compounds increase their risk for stillbirths.
10. Miscarriages +
High levels of THM's (trihalomethanes) may also have an effect on pregnancy. A California study found that pregnant women who drank large amounts of tap water with high THM's had an increased risk of miscarriage.
A study, led by California health department investigators Kirsten Waller and Shanna Swann, examined the records of 5,144 pregnant women from the Fontana, Santa Clara and Walnut Creek areas.
The study, found that women who drank five or more glasses of tap water per day with at least 75 micrograms per liter of THM's had an increased risk of miscarriage.
11. Ovarian problems +
A study conducted by Windham et al. (2003) suggests that THM exposure in chlorine may affect
Other Health Effects
12. Breakdown of the immune system +
When chlorine gets in your system, it destroys much of your beneficial intestinal flora. This not only disrupts your digestion and causes issues such as bloating and indigestion, but also also allows the Candida yeast to run rampant and weaken your immune system.
13. Cancer +
Scientific studies have linked chlorine and chlorination by-products to cancer of the bladder, breast, kidney, liver, testicular cancer, rectum, prostate and colon. Our pores open up and soak this known carcinogen directly into the bloodstream, contributing to the 9% of all bladder cancers and 15% of all rectal cancers in the US which research conducted jointly at Harvard and the Medical College of Wisconsin has attributed to chlorinated water.
"One common factor among women with breast cancer is that they all have 50-60% higher levels of these chlorination by-products (THM's) in their fat tissue than women without breast cancer..."
One of the most studied DBP's is trihalomethanes, which been shown to cause cell mutation (i.e. carcinogenic) in rats and has been associated with bladder, colon, and rectal cancer in the general population. Trihalomethanes are fat soluble, meaning they accumulated in the fatty tissues of the body.
One of the most prevalent forms of chlorine taken in through inhalation is chloroform. Remember, chloroform is a carcinogen, and it’s also linked to excessive free radical formation, cell mutation, and the oxidation of cholesterol.
See report from Scientific American
When the EPA conducted a 2-year rat and mice study of chlorinated and chloraminated water they found higher incidence of mononuclear cell leukemia in female F344/N rats at mid- and high-dose levels for both
• chlorine (leukemia rates: control, 8/50; low-dose, 7/50; mid-dose, 19/51; high-dose, 16/50) and
• chloramines (leukemia rates: control 8/50; low dose, 11/50; mid dose, 15/50; and high dose, 16/50).
One in every six men develops prostate cancer, a rate that has increased over the last 30 years.
So, the bottom line with chlorine is that it kills germs, but it is a highly reactive chemical that generates potentially carcinogenic compounds in the water or in your body. It needs to be removed from the water before drinking it.
14. Dry Eyes From Showering +
Chlorine causes irritation in many ways. People with sensitive eyes and eye allergies need an efficient shower system to reduce the harmful effects of chlorine as far as possible. Eyes dry faster with chlorine than water free of chlorine.
15. Malignant melanoma - the most-feared type of skin cancer +
Content Dr. W.C. Douglass, author of "Don't Drink the Water," cites Belgian research linking malignant melanoma to consumption of chlorinated water.
16. Heart disease +
Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated levels of chloroform in nearly every home because of the chlorine in the water and studies have linked these chlorine by-products to serious health risks such heart disease.
17. High Blood pressure +
Studies have also linked by-products in Chlorine to high blood pressure.
18. Low sperm counts +
Many researchers believe chlorine mimics hormones, resulting in low sperm counts. Did you know that worldwide sperm count has reduced 50% in the last 50 years
Chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes which are carcinogens resulting from the combination of chlorine with organic compounds in water. These chemicals, also known as organochlorides, do not degrade very well and are generally stored in the fatty tissues of the body (breast, other fatty areas, mothers' milk, blood and semen). Organochlorides can cause mutations by altering DNA, suppress immune system function and interfere with the natural controls of cell growth.
19. Pulmonary edema (fluid accumulation in the lungs) +
According to an article from Science News, researchers found increases in chloroform in study participants’ lungs of about 2.7ppb after a 10-minute shower.
Chlorine causes pulmonary edema, and it would seem likely that regular exposure to chlorine gas may reduce the oxygen transfer capacity of the lungs.
20. Anemia (low blood cell count, low hemoglobin) +
Scientific studies have linked chlorine and chlorination by-products to anemia.
21. Eczema and psoriasis +
Chloramines has been known to aggravate skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis.
22. Fatigue +
As chlorine is a leading cause of fatigue, showering in filtered, chlorine-free water results in higher energy levels and overall greater health.
23. Interference with the natural controls of cell growth +
Chlorinated water contains chemical compounds called trihalomethanes. These chemicals, also known as organochlorides, do not degrade very well and are generally stored in the fatty tissues of the body (breast, other fatty areas, mother’s milk, blood and semen). Organochlorides can cause mutations by altering DNA, suppress immune system function and interfere with the natural controls of cell growth.
22. Depression of the central nervous system +
Content The most harmful THM is chloroform, a known carcinogen which causes liver & kidney damage and depression of the central nervous system.
23. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) +
Dr. Joseph Price wrote a highly controversial book in the late sixties titled Coronaries/ Cholesterol/ Chlorine and concluded, “ Nothing can negate the incontrovertible fact, the basic cause of atherosclerosis and resulting entities such as heart attacks and stroke, is chlorine.”
24. Chloramine interferes with thyroid gland's production of thyroid hormones +
Chlorine and fluoride block iodine receptors in the thyroid gland, resulting in reduced iodine-containing hormone production and finally in hypothyroidism.
25. Rashes and other skin irritations +
The chlorine in showering water can cause rashes and other skin irritations when absorbed by the skin.
26. Respiratory conditions and effect on lungs +
If you bathe or shower in unfiltered tap water you are inhaling and absorbing chlorine into your body which contribute to or aggravated respiratory conditions (nose, throat, lungs, sinuses): Asthma, bronchitis. Chlorine gas cannot be screened out by our lungs — it goes in faster than oxygen, and is immediately absorbed into the bloodstream when it is inhaled.
According to a Belgian study that was released in 2003, certain irritants called trichloramines are released any time chlorinated water reacts with organic materials (such as sweat or urine) from people.³ Trichloramines are believed to initiate a biological process that effectively destroys the cellular barriers surrounding the lungs.
27. Chronic digestive disorders +
Chlorinated water destroys much of the intestinal flora, the friendly bacteria that help in the digestion of food and which protect the body from harmful pathogens. These bacteria are also responsible for the manufacture of several important vitamins like vitamin B12 and vitamin K. It is not uncommon for chronic digestive disorders clear up or be significantly improved by switching to un chlorinated drinking water.
28. Asthma +
Chlorine has been documented to aggravate asthma in children.
29.Allergic reactions +
Prolonged chloramines exposure can potentially damage lung mucous, making the lungs more susceptible to allergens and infections.
Chlorine can also be toxic to plants:
Chlorine kills not only the bad bugs in the water but also the beneficial moulds, fungi and bacteria in the soil, which support the health and growth of plants by aiding nutrient uptake. Additionally, high chlorine levels can be toxic to plants themselves.
Using chlorinated water or water that has too high of a chlorine content can cause damage to tomato plants. If continued over an extended period, chlorine can lead to the death of the plant. Chlorinated water has too high of a chemical content to be used consistently for watering tomato plants. Chlorine will affect the amount of water absorbed as well as the plant's nutritional development.
Installation and Usage
Installing a chlorine shower filter is a pretty simple task. Generally use need to unscrew your existing shower head, attached to filter at the end of the pipe feeding your shower, and then reattach her shower head to the in the filter. They’re also not that expensive considering what it can do for your health.
As with most things that have a filter element you’ll need to replace the filter periodically. How long they last depends on how many times the shower is used each day, how long the showers last, and how much chlorine is in the water.
Simply stated chlorine is a pesticide, as defined by the U.S. EPA, who’s sole purpose is to kill living organisms. When we consume water containing chlorine, it kills some part of us, destroying cells and tissue inside our body. Dr. Robert Carlson, a highly respected University of Minnesota researcher who’s work is sponsored by the Federal Environmental Protection Agency, sums it up by claiming , “the chlorine problem is similar to that of air pollution”, and adds that “chlorine is the greatest crippler and killer of modern times!”
